Straumann implants: UK cost vs Romania
Straumann is the Swiss implant system with the longest published research record in implant dentistry, and it is priced accordingly. In UK private practice an implant with abutment and crown is commonly quoted at £2,000 to £2,800, with premium system cases toward the top of that range. In our Bucharest clinic implant cases start at £560 per tooth including the abutment and zirconia crown, with the system, Straumann BLX or Oxy, named in your itemised quote before you pay anything. Prices checked August 2026.
What are you actually paying for in an implant?
Four things: the implant itself, the abutment that connects it to the tooth, the crown, and everything human around them, which means planning, surgery time, laboratory work and follow up. The components are catalogue items with fixed international pricing. The human part is where a London bill and a Bucharest bill part company, because chair time, rent and laboratory fees cost a fraction in Romania of what they cost in the UK. When a UK quote is four times ours for the same named system, the difference is not in the box.
Why does the same Swiss implant cost less in Bucharest?
Straumann does not discount by country of clinic; clinics everywhere buy into the same catalogue. What changes is the overhead the clinic must recover on every hour of surgery. Bucharest overheads are low enough that the whole treatment, components included, can cost less than the UK component markup alone. Same implant, same fusing time, same instruments, different rent.
Straumann or Oxy: which will your quote name?
We place two systems. Straumann, when your case benefits from its research base and component range, and Oxy Implants, an Italian system we have placed for years with results we are happy to stand behind. Both carry a 10 year written guarantee on the implant, and implant cases run the same way with either: two trips, three to four months apart, so the implant can fuse with the bone before the final tooth is fitted. Your treatment plan names the system before you pay anything, and you should expect that in writing from any clinic in any country. A quote that says only implant, unnamed, is asking you to buy a car with the badge taped over.
Does the brand matter more than the dentist?
No, and it is worth being straight about that. A well planned case with a well placed reputable system beats a badly planned case with the most expensive components on the market. The brand buys you research history, component availability and traceability; the planning and placement decide how the next decade goes. This is why the useful questions are who is treating me, what exactly are they placing, and what does the written plan say, in that order. The system name matters most on the day, years from now, when another dentist needs to work with what is in your jaw.
Why the component ecosystem matters in 2040
An implant is a twenty year relationship with a supply chain. Crowns chip, screws loosen, parts wear, and when that happens the dentist in front of you, wherever you live by then, needs to source an abutment or a screw that fits the exact system in your jaw. Straumann parts are stocked in practically every country a UK patient might ever move to, which is a genuine part of what the premium buys. Oxy parts are ordered through its distribution network, standard practice for established systems. Either way, this is why your records and the traceability labels leave Bucharest with you: the brand, reference and lot number on that label are what turns a future repair from detective work into an order form.
How the treatment actually runs, whichever system is named
Implant treatment is two trips, three to four months apart, with each Bucharest visit lasting three to four days. First trip: planning confirmation, surgery, and the implant goes in. Then the wait, at home, while bone grows onto the implant surface; this is biology and no brand shortens it honestly. Second trip: the abutment and final zirconia crown are fitted and checked. Every consultation, scan and follow up inside those visits is in the fixed quote, the work carries a 10 year written guarantee on the implant, and payment happens at the clinic, staged as the work progresses, never as an upfront transfer from the UK.
How to verify what you are actually getting
Every genuine implant ships with a traceability label recording the brand, reference and lot number, required under EU Regulation 2017/745. Ask for it after surgery and keep it with your records; we hand it over as standard, with your X-rays. It is also exactly what a UK dentist will want if they ever maintain or repair the tooth, because with the reference and lot they can order matching components anywhere in the world. A clinic that cannot produce the label has not placed what it sold you.
Questions UK patients ask about Straumann
How much do Straumann implants cost in the UK?
Commonly £2,000 to £2,800 for the implant, abutment and crown as a finished tooth, with premium and complex cases above that. Practices price the whole course differently, so compare finished course totals, never the implant line alone.
Are Straumann implants worth the premium?
For many cases, yes: the research record and worldwide component availability are real advantages, especially for whoever treats you decades from now. Whether your case benefits enough to choose it over an excellent standard system is a clinical judgement, which is why our quotes name the recommended system and the reason rather than defaulting everyone to the most expensive line.
Is the £560 price for Straumann or for Oxy?
From £560 is the starting point for an implant, abutment and zirconia crown as a finished tooth; the system for your case is named in the itemised quote, and if Straumann is recommended, its line shows the exact figure before you commit to anything. What we do not do is advertise one brand and place another. The label you receive after surgery matches the quote you accepted, and you can check it.
Can my UK dentist look after an implant placed in Bucharest?
Yes. You leave with your records, your X-rays and the implant traceability labels, which is everything a UK practice needs to identify the system and source parts. Routine hygiene and checkups can happen locally as normal, and the guarantee stays with us in writing.
